Redknapp: backed by many experts

Fabio Capello has gone... so where does the England football team go from here?

The Italian walked out of the job on Wednesday leaving the national team without a figurehead just four months before Euro 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine.

Harry Redknapp was installed as an overwhelming early favourite by the bookmakers with the names of Stuart Pearce, Roy Hodgson, Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink also near the top of the betting lists.

But what would be the best move for the Football Association? Sky Sports News HD canvassed the opinion of some of the leading figures in the game...

Peter Shilton, England 1970-1990

I have always advocated an English manager and now it is time to get an Englishman in. Harry Redknapp is everyone's favourite and hopefully The FA can get him in there and give him a chance. His record at Spurs in particular has almost made it his job. I have always had a problem with Harry handling the pressure side of football at the top level but I think he has matured and now it is time. My choice would have been Martin O'Neill but I think Harry is the man for the job now. England need someone who the players look up to and who wants to play the game in the right way, it is all about man-management and motivation. Harry understands the English game - he has been a journeyman in football and has been around a few places and what he has done at Spurs has put him right up there. If you look around there is not really any other English managers you would put in front of him and I think it is inevitable that it will be Harry. But we will have to wait and see, Tottenham will have something to say about that and Harry is very loyal to Tottenham too.

Peter Reid, England 1985-88

With no disrespect to Mr Capello I think it could be a blessing in disguise. I'm not sure whether he wanted to be here and I'm certain that if the right man gets the job he can galvanise the squad. There is some good young players coming through if Jack Wilshere's fit and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's in there. We've got some really good players in this country and I think it's a matter of getting everybody together and getting a spirit going because that counts. With what's happened over the John Terry situation that spirit of togetherness has got to come from somewhere. Harry Redknapp's the man to do that in my opinion.

Alan Smith, England 1988-1992

I think there is only one man for the job! Now considering the day Harry Redknapp had on Wednesday I doubt the FA have had a chance to square things with him and ask him what he felt about it. But Harry would appear to be the only man in the ring. You don't know what the FA are thinking - perhaps Trevor Brooking and Stuart Pearce to see us through the next three friendlies. Don't forget we have got one at the end of the month against Holland, and then we have Norway in May and then Belgium at the start of June. They are three vital friendlies for England to start anew. It will be a new voice in the dressing room with new methods, whether it is someone doing it part-time until we can get someone more permanent or whether it is Harry Redknapp who can do it alongside his duties at Tottenham. If we can get the right man in then we can feel optimistic.

Neil Warnock, QPR manager 2010-2012

There is only one man who can get this job and that is Harry Redknapp. And whatever it takes the FA have got to go and get that sorted now. We have messed around for so many years and given so many millions away. The one thing that is missing that you cannot get out of the coaching manuals is humour and not just a good judge of a player. Harry can deal with all the top-flight millionaires but he has got humour and you need that for these top tournaments. I like the way he handles himself and I don't see anyone else as a candidate. I don't think we will win the Euros even if Harry does take over though - what we need is for him to take over and build towards 2014. We have got some great players in this country but we don't play them in the right areas we don't give them the freedom and we don't let them express themselves. Harry Redknapp does all of those and ticks all the boxes. He is the only Englishman capable of doing what we want to do and that is to progress to the latter stages of a tournaments. We have got to go cap in hand to Daniel Levy and ask if Harry can do a part-time job and then from May onwards let him have a go in the summer. I would be excited if Harry took over in May or June.

Kenny Sansom, England 1979 -1988

You must have someone who knows the squad - Stuart Pearce has been mentioned and he is second favourite behind Harry Redknapp. I think just for the Euros Stuart Pearce should get the job - just for now. Maybe alongside someone like Terry Venables who has been there - he managed England in the Euros in 1996 and for me he is the best manager I have ever had. I don't think you can employ a new manager now and give him a five-year contract because the changes in style is all going to change and I don't think four months is long enough. Stuart Pearce knows the whole routine - Terry has been there before so I think purely for the European Championships that would be the ideal situation. Maybe after Tottenham have done what they have done this season then approach Harry - I am sure he would love it. If The FA want Harry, I think they will have to pay a lot of money though.

Barry Fry, Peterborough chairman

I can't believe any Englishman wants another foreigner as manager of our country. I can't believe there's one out there, I really can't. We want an Englishman full of passion and commitment for our country. I'm telling you, we've had enough of these foreigners; they haven't got no passion, they haven't got no commitment, all they want is the money. Let's get Harry in. There's only one bloke, so forget about anybody else; Harry Redknapp is our man. He's a players' man, he's a fans' man and let him get on with it. You might have to put Stuart [Pearce] in temporary charge and then Harry if Daniel Levy won't let him go. There's only one man in the frame, so give him the job as soon as possible and let him get on with it.
