Gary Neville says Manchester United's 3-3 draw at Chelsea required an 'incredible effort' from the Premier League champions.

United came back from 3-0 down to earn a point at Stamford Bridge thanks to two penalties from Wayne Rooney and a late header from Javier Hernandez.

A Jonny Evans own goal and efforts from Juan Mata and David Luiz had appeared to have given the home side an unassailable lead but the teams could not be separated after five second-half goals.

United are now two points behind Manchester City at the top of the table but Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson's charges will be delighted to have earned a point.

"I think the way they played they will be disappointed but at 3-0 down, taking a point away from Chelsea is an incredible effort," said the Sky Sports expert.

"Looking at it overall, at the start of this week with the games Manchester City and Manchester United had, if you'd have said that Manchester United would have closed the gap I think they would have taken it.

"So much has happened in that game, it's difficult to analyse. It was unbelievable and it could have gone either way. I think Manchester United played well but still gave away three goals.

"It just sums up the whole season, I've never seen the top teams play so many incredible games. Even at 3-0 you thought Manchester United would score goals."

In eight matches between the top four teams in the Premier League this season there have been 36 goals and Neville admits it has been a campaign like no other.

He added: "I played for 15 years in big games against Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and they were always tight games. This season I don't know what's happened."
