Free Agent - Leon Knight

The next free agent to fall under our microscope is former Chelsea youngster Leon Knight.

The next free agent to fall under our microscope is striker Leon Knight

A diminutive striker blessed with electric pace and a keen eye for goal, Knight has a proven track record when it comes to finding the back of the net. Unable to make the grade at Chelsea, he enjoyed his most productive spell while on the books of Brighton. His career may have wavered off course somewhat since then, but he remains a predatory frontman who is capable of terrorising opposition defences. He has graced just about every level of English football, has tried his luck in Scotland and even took in a spell in the Greek second division in 2009. Is it worrying being an out-of-contract player in the current climate or is that now part and parcel of a footballer's career? It's something I accept. It's modern football, with certain clubs struggling. I hold my hands up as well because I haven't done anything for...god knows how long. It's something you accept, get on with it and hope for the best. You just have to see what comes of me being on the PFA website and doing other stuff. Is it just a case of believing in yourself and expecting something to come? I think everyone who knows me knows that having belief in my own ability is an understatement. I am just holding out at the moment and waiting for a call. I'm waiting for somebody to come along and say come over for a couple of weeks, something like that. Have you had much interest shown in you so far? I have had a few from abroad and that. I have got a couple of kids now though and I want to be in and around the UK. I am just waiting to see what happens. The season is coming upon us soon and decisions have to be made. Maybe it will have to be abroad, but we will see what happens. Would you be willing to relocate again? Do you have to accept that you need to move where the contracts are? You have to go where the contracts are. I have been around and travelled up and down the UK and I have been out abroad, so it doesn't really bother me but I would like to stay in the UK. If I have to go abroad again, though, so be it. What about the prospect of a stint in America or Australia? Would that appeal? I think at the moment that's second in my mind. But if a good deal comes up and it's a good club and the facilities are good, all those things need to be taken into consideration, then most definitely. What is your mindset heading into the summer, are you just looking to sit tight or are you going out of your way to try and find something? I don't go looking to be honest. I have done a fair bit in my career, I'm not saying that speaks for itself, but I think people know whether they want to take a look at me. I don't go looking. It's not in me to go doing that. I will just sit tight and see what happens. Fingers crossed something will pop up. Maybe a couple of weeks trial, whatever. Are you expecting to have to go for a trial or do you think you can earn a contract straight up? In some clubs' cases it will be a trial, for the higher profile clubs. In some cases, in the lower profile clubs, it could just be a contract. It depends which club you get. I would know what would be on the cards and they would know, so you have to wait. Do you have any idea as to the standard you are aiming at and what level you would like to play? I can play Championship, League One, League Two, I have played in the Conference, and I have played in Scotland. Basically, I'm open to anything in any league. Hopefully something will come up and I can knuckle down and get my name back in the limelight. Is that what you need now, somewhere to settle down and get back to your best? That's exactly it. Obviously you have to earn a contract, but I need a few years of contract so I can settle down. My most successful time was at Brighton, and I was there for three-and-a-half years and knuckled down. You get to know the people around you, the players around you, and sometimes a season just isn't enough. Sometimes it can work, I went to Swansea and it was a season and a bit and it clicked. But you need time to gel. I am looking for a good club and hopefully I can reach those goals that I reached a couple of years ago. It's still relatively early in the summer, are you confident you will get something sorted? The World Cup is on isn't it? Managers who aren't even looking to bring some of those players are over there anyway. It's really early days. I know some clubs are going back in for pre-season but that doesn't bother me. I will be training a bit anyway. Hopefully, with Lady Luck, something will come up and you will be interviewing me in a different position in the near future. What do you feel you would offer prospective employers? What do you feel are your best attributes? The goalscoring record speaks for itself. You have natural goalscoring instinct and you never lose that. When you get older you lose sharpness and stuff but your awareness for the game and for scoring, you don't lose that. Hopefully clubs will see that and take me on. To see the full list of players currently available as free agents, provided by the PFA, click here. We would like to hear your thoughts on the best free transfers out there. Who should we be talking to? Who are this summer's bargains? Who should your club be targeting?
