Tottenham supporters are lobbying FA chairman Greg Dyke to let the team play at Wembley during the 2017-18 season.
Spurs must find a new ground whilst they finish building the Northumberland Park development, the new plans for which were released on Wednesday, and the club are in ongoing negotiations with both Wembley and Stadium:MK in Milton Keynes.
Sky Sports reported last month that Wembley was the overwhelming preference among Spurs fans, with two surveys by the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST) finding an 80% majority in favour, but newspapers have reported they now face competition from Chelsea, who are exploring the idea of a Wembley ground-share as part of talks over the expansion of Stamford Bridge.
THST has written an open letter to Dyke urging him to agree a deal with Spurs and the trust say they would be happy to ground-share with Chelsea if need be.
THST co-chair Kat Law told Sky Sports News HQ: “For a year now we have been lobbying the club for a Wembley ground-share, with an 80% majority in favour in our two surveys.
“We know the club have been talking to the FA about Wembley but on Wednesday, in Daniel’s interview with Sky, it seems they’ve had enough too and he went public.
“Apparently Chelsea are also interested in the ground share too but Tottenham are at a much later stage with plans. The stadium has already started to be built whereas Chelsea are still in the early discussion stage and have plenty of hurdles to overcome.
“But even if Chelsea could be ready by 2017-18, it is possible for both teams to play there and we would be happy to ground-share. There is no limit to the number of events Wembley can stage under a capacity of 50,800.
“It would be double the income for the FA and Tottenham fans want to stay in London, and the club wants to stay in London. We’re encouraging Greg Dyke to do the right thing for all concerned.”
