Orlando SC midfielder Kaka was shown the first straight red card of his career for what the referee adjudged to be a stamp.
The Brazilian had scored after five minutes against Real Salt Lake in MLS on Saturday evening, but on the stroke of half-time was dismissed after an incident with Javier Morales.
