Diego Simeone's agent has hinted the Atletico Madrid coach is to extend his contract at the Vicente Calderon after revealing the club are set for “good news” in the coming days.

Simeone’s stock has soared since returning to the Spanish capital to take the reins in December 2011 and a number of clubs, most notably Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, have been impressed with his work.

The Argentine’s side progressed through to the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday night after defeating Bayer Leverkusen on penalties.

Simeone’s sister and agent Natalia was in attendance at the Calderon for the match and revealed afterwards that there will soon be “good news” regarding her brother’s contract renewal.

She told Spanish state TV: "Surrounding the renewal of Simeone at the club, there will be good news in the next few days. The fans went home happy tonight and they will be happy again soon.

Stefan Kiessling was the guilty party as he missed the crucial penalty in Bayern Leverkusen's Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

“El Cholo (Simeone) always believed in the work of his players. Hard work always pays off as he would say. It was emotional as the fans at the Calderon always give you a shot of adrenalin.”

The manager himself was asked about his contract renewal in his post-match press conference but insisted that nothing has been finalised yet.

He said: "There is nothing resolved yet but I hope to be able to make an announcement soon.”
