Wigan have confirmed three more directors will leave the board at the end of the current season.

The news comes a day after former chairman Dave Whelan stepped down following 20 years in charge at the club.

Whelan’s grandson David Sharpe has taken the reins along with chief executive Jonathan Jackson as the Championship club embark on a new era.

Vice-chairman Phillip Williams and board members John Winstanley and Brian Ashcroft have decided to leave their posts.

Along with Whelan the trio presided over a glorious era which saw the Latics climb from the old Third Division to the top-flight of English football and secure a first major honour in May 2013, when they won the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Wembley.

In a statement, Wigan said: "Following Mr Whelan’s departure from the board, the directors felt it was the right time to move aside to allow the incoming chairman to shape the future, but will remain in place for the rest of the season to assist David Sharpe and Jonathan Jackson during this transitional period.

“Williams and Winstanley were elected on to the board of directors in 1995, with Brian Ashcroft following in 1996 – and all three have served the club loyally since then, as Latics rose through the divisions, remained in the Premier League for eight seasons, and of course won the FA Cup and qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

“The club would like to officially place on record its gratitude for their services over the past two decades.”
