Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has said that midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini looks set to miss the remainder of the season through injury.

The 29-year-old required surgery after aggravating an ankle injury during the FA Cup clash at Fulham earlier this month.

Giaccherini has only appeared in seven Premier League games this season due to the same problem.

And Poyet told a press conference on Thursday: “He’s having an operation today and unfortunately he is going to be out for the next 12 weeks – minimum.

“This means three months. He was one of the players in form, started the season strongly, got injured, and it took him a while to come back.

“Then, just as he was starting to perform at his best, he got another kick in the same place.

“So the medical staff and specialists took the decision for him to have the operation so he can be 100% next season.”
