Queens Park Rangers will be without midfielder Leroy Fer for at least the next two months after the Dutch midfielder sustained knee ligament damage in the match against Sunderland.

Fer had opened the scoring at the Stadium of Light to help the Londoners record their first away victory in the Premier League this season.

A second-half challenge with Liam Bridcutt felled the Dutchman, who was carried from the field on a stretcher.

After the game he took to Twitter saying: “Well done lads! Hopefully my injury is not too bad.”

QPR owner Tony Fernandes added: “Thoughts go to Leroy Fer. Team player and gentleman.”

But QPR confirmed the bad news on Wednesday evening on their website, saying Fer has "a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee."

The club said they expect him to be out of action for eight to 10 weeks.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined QPR from Norwich in August last year after playing in the Dutch Eredivisie for Feyenoord and FC Twente.

Fer, who has 11 Netherlands caps to his name, has been an important player for QPR as they battle to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

He has been a regular starter, making 26 appearances in all competitions this season.
