QPR caretaker manager Chris Ramsey says the win over Sunderland has been a long time coming

QPR caretaker manager Chris Ramsey stayed grounded after a first away win of the season at Sunderland - but admitted he was still keen to land the job full-time.

The west Londoners, who had lost all their previous 11 Premier League games on the road this season, had a 2-0 win sewn up by half-time at the Stadium of Light thanks to Leroy Fer and Bobby Zamora.

The win lifts QPR out of the bottom three and although only goal difference sees them above an Aston Villa side beaten at Hull, Ramsey talked up the psychological boost.

“It’s nice from a visual point of view to see that you are above the line and I think the boys can build on it,” said Ramsey.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet says his side paid the price for not starting the game well

“We didn’t over congratulate them tonight as they played to their potential. So we can’t really congratulate people for doing what they are supposed to do and what they are good at. The boys believe in each other and we need to stick together and continue to perform like that for the fans.”

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes tweeted before the game that he had found his “dream” manager following the departure of Harry Redknapp.

Ramsey refused to rule out the possibility he was Fernandes' mystery man and reiterated his desire to land the role on a permanent basis.

“If the job’s available and I’m the right man for the job then I’ll do it,” he added. “If not, I’ll stay as an employee – head of player development – for the club and continue to support the cause.”

Asked again in his news conference if he thought he deserved the job full-time, he said with a smile: "I thought I deserved it before this!

"At the end of the day, I have said it before, your life can't be defined by 90 minutes or a fantastic swivel shot that Bobby scored.

"Your life can't be dictated by that. You are either the right man for the job, for the long-term plan, or you're not."
