Adnan Januzaj has admitted the system Louis van Gaal has instilled at Manchester United makes it 'more difficult for him to play'.
The Belgian forward has found first-team football hard to come by this season under the Dutch supremo, and has been deployed in a variety of positions, including as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 system.
Last season under David Moyes, the 19-year-old played a key role as an attacking winger or a striker, and was very much in favour.
Sitting on the sidelines this season has frustrated Januzaj, but it is the roles he has been asked to undertake that he has found the most disappointing.
I’m not really a wing-back. It’s harder for me because there is more defending involved and I’m not really a defender.
“Yes, the system can make it more difficult for me to play there but I have to keep working,” Januzaj said.
“That is what I am doing in training every day, as I want to get more games this season.
“I’m not really a wing-back. It’s harder for me because there is more defending involved and I’m not really a defender.”
Despite Januzaj insisting his preferred position is much further forward, after making just five league starts under Van Gaal, he knows he may have to take his opportunity wherever he is asked to play.
“It depends on how my football evolves,” Januzaj added.
“My favourite position is as a No 10 or a winger.
“There are lots of players here and I can play in different roles – it’s just a case of taking my opportunities.”
