Ajax and Feyenoord both lost ground on Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven after playing out a goalless draw on Sunday afternoon.
Only once before – in 1978 – had the great "Klassieker" fixture of the Dutch season failed to produce a goal and the result does little to help either side.
PSV, who won 2-1 at Cambuur on Saturday evening, are now six points ahead of Ajax and 14 clear of third-placed Feyenoord.
Feyenoord were largely the better side at the Amsterdam Arena and wasted a couple of good chances in the first half.
Colin Kazim-Richards shot wide and then Jean-Paul Boetius has his shot cleared off the line by Arkadiusz Milik.
“If we want to be champions, we have to do a lot better," said Ajax coach Frank de Boer, who is chasing his fifth consecutive league title with the club.
Elsewhere, Groningen and Utrecht played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Euroborg. Tjaronn Chery gave the hosts the lead on 31 minutes before Eduouard Duplan's equaliser just two minutes later.
Michael de Leeuw put Groningen ahead for the second time just after half-time but five minutes later Utrecht equalised once more, this time through Yassine Ayoub.
Go Ahead Eagles beat Den Haag 1-0 at home to leapfrog their opponents into 14th place. Jop van der Linden's penalty two minutes before half-time was enough for the win after Vito Wormgoor was sent off for Den Haag following a foul in the area.
NAC Breda, struggling in 17th place, played out a 0-0 draw at home to Willem II.
