Leicester remain confident they can capture Wigan’s Shaun Maloney and are discussing a second bid for the attacker, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports understands the Foxes made a bid of close to £1m for the Scotland international, which was turned down by the Sky Bet Championship club.

Leicester, who are bottom of the Premier League, are keen to improve their squad to avoid relegation and completed the signing of veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on Tuesday.

Sky sources also understand the Midlands club are close to completing a deal to sign Croatia striker Andrej Kramaric from Rijeka and have a number of other targets.

Maloney has made 20 appearances this season for Wigan, who are struggling in the bottom three of the Championship despite hiring Malky Mackay as manager after sacking Uwe Rosler last November.

Maloney joined the Latics for £1m in 2011 following his second spell at Celtic, where he made just over 50 appearances in three years.

He originally left his boyhood club in 2007 to re-join manager Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa, again for £1m, but struggled to break into the first team, returning to Celtic Park after 18 months.

Maloney has 37 caps for Scotland, and four goals.
