Liverpool remain a work in progress but they are showing signs of last season's form, says Jamie Carragher

Liverpool are showing signs of the form which propelled them to within reach of a maiden Premier League title last season, according to Jamie Carragher.

The Merseysiders put in an improved display against Arsenal on Super Sunday, as Martin Skrtel struck at the death to salvage a point for the hosts.

But Liverpool legend Carragher believes the mini-revival can only be attributed to Brendan Rodgers' midfield, arguing that there was still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in both penalty areas.

"For most the season, Liverpool have been toothless in every area, but at the moment they’re toothless in both boxes, which are the most important places on a football pitch," he told Monday Night Football.

The draw with Arsenal for me showed signs of what I saw from Liverpool last season. It looked like they were coming back to what they were like last season.

"But between the two boxes however, from what I saw yesterday, that performance was a sign of what I saw from Liverpool last season.

"Fast possession, people running forward and penetration... but there are still problems in the boxes."

Despite improved performances in recent weeks, Carragher believes the inability to convert chances and keep clean sheets is hampering their chances of regaining last season's form.

More from Liverpool V Arsenal

"Liverpool have faced eight shots on target in the last two Premier League games and they’ve conceded five goals," he added.

"They've had over 40 shots in both games and scored two goals - that's where the problems are for Liverpool.

"But between those two areas, in the middle of the park, it looked like there were signs that Liverpool were coming back to what they were like last season. But they've got to improve in the boxes."
