Premier League: Burnley's Kieran Trippier inspired by Southampton opponent Nathaniel Clyne

Burnley right back Kieran Trippier is taking inspiration from Southampton counterpart Nathaniel Clyne's elevation into the England squad.

The pair were opposing right-backs on Saturday and it was Trippier's Burnley that came out on top in a 1-0 victory.

Clyne's form with Saints over the past two years earned the attention of Roy Hodgson and he made his England debut last month in the Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Slovenia.

Trippier has been one of Burnley's stand-out players this season, along with striker Danny Ings, and he remains hopeful of adding to the caps he won from U18 to U21 level.

He (Clyne) is a great right-back and I can learn off Nathaniel because he's played a lot of games in the Premier League.

And seeing a player like Clyne from one of the Premier League's smaller sides given a chance at the top level provides added encouragement for the 24-year-old.

Trippier said: "He deserves it. He's been brilliant this year and last year. I used to watch him a lot last season. He's a great right-back and I can learn off Nathaniel because he's played a lot of games in the Premier League.

"I watched him a lot when he was at Palace and now he's stepped up to Southampton and done brilliantly.

More from Burnley V Southampton

"I'm delighted for him but of course everyone wants to play for your country and I'm no different. There's no rush. I'll just keep focusing on my performances and see where it takes me."

After a torrid start to life in the Premier League, Burnley earned their third win in six games on Saturday to climb out of the relegation zone.

Key moment

The key moments both came in the second half, with Burnley keeper Tom Heaton saving Dusan Tadic's penalty before Ashley Barnes' deflected shot earned the Clarets victory.

Trippier said: "We knew it was going to be a tough game. You see Southampton's team and where they are in the league but we put on a great display and got the three points and a clean sheet. We're all full of confidence now."

Both Tadic and Southampton have an excellent penalty record but Heaton is building a reputation for saving them.

The 28-year-old said: "There's always an element of guessing. To be fair to the analyst, every game this season I've had a sheet and a video to look through.

"There was a lot of green dots on that sheet so you sort of have an idea where he likes to go. This time it landed in the right place.

"You can often find that tackles, shots, saves can be big turning points in games. The crowd got up again, gave us that extra bit of belief and we scored not too long after it."

Scoring goals remains an issue for Burnley, with only 11 in 16 games, but they have kept five clean sheets and Heaton believes that resilience will serve them well.

"We feel we've got a great chance of being successful," he said. "I think if we keep that sort of defensive framework there, keep the ball out of the net, then we're going to have a great chance (of staying up)."
