Former Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle believes the club needs "a special player" if they are to take the next step and challenge for a spot in the Champions League this season.

Spurs are currently 10th in the table having lost more home games this season than they have won and Hoddle says the group of players at White Hart Lane do not have the attributes to produce the sort of football that manager Mauricio Pochettino wants.

He (Pochettino) may want to bring in some fresh people. Whether Daniel (Levy, the chairman) is going to be up for that remains to be seen.

Hoddle, who made 377 appearances for Spurs who he also managed between 2001 and 2003, said: "He (Pochettino) may want to bring in some fresh people. Whether Daniel (Levy, the chairman) is going to be up for that remains to be seen.

"It is very difficult nowadays. There is a lack of world class strikers and midfield players which control the game, express themselves and that is what I think they miss.

“They have some good players but they don't have a special player."

And Hoddle, one of White Hart Lane’s most famous sons who is now coaching at QPR, says the club’s Argentinian boss is trying to create a side that can play the type of pressing football which brought so much success to Southampton during 2013/14.

Hoddle added: "There's a lot of talent there and the manager will try and get the best out of the talent there.

"He's tinkered with it (style of play). I saw them at home to Everton they were very positive, at Southampton he wanted a tempo and he got it.

"The personnel at Tottenham are different - they won't press as hard. It is something they have worked on at Spurs and something they will try and improve on.

"They have got to put a really good run together but if you win two or three games in this league it can turn around. The strikers have to start scoring goals, I think then the team can feed off that."
