LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane has been named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 MLS season.

The Republic of Ireland international scored 19 goals for his club and assisted on another 14 to come within one of Chris Wondolowski's record of 34 goal contributions in the 2012 season.

Keane beat off competition from New England's Lee Nguyen and Seattle's Obafemi Martins, who were the other finalists for the award.

He finished with a weighted total of 88.69, some way ahead of Martins (63.22), and was top of the voting list in the club, media and player categories.

The 34-year-old will bid to cap off his season on Sunday when his side take on Nguyen's Revolution in the MLS Cup final at the Galaxy's StubHub Center home in Carson, California.

He was also named in the MLS Best XI, along with Martins, Nguyen and Thierry Henry, who has since announced his departure from the New York Red Bulls.

Newcomer of the Year went to Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Pedro Morales - he becomes the first player from his franchise to win an end-of-season award since they joined the MLS.

Morales scored 10 goals and contributed 12 assists to lead the Whitecaps to the post-season and victory in the Cascadia Cup against rivals Portland and Seattle.
