Madden magic lifts Robins

Scunthorpe manager Mark Robins hailed two-goal hero Paddy Madden after his side's 2-1 win at Barnsley.

Madden scored less than a minute after Barnsley's on-loan Fulham striker Marcello Trotta had given the home side the lead in the 29th minute. Scunthorpe forward Madden then weaved his way through the defence to score the winner just before the break. Robins said that his side deserved the win and showed character to come back from a goal behind. He said: "It's a great result for us because I like Barnsley this season and they are always very difficult to beat at home. "We went behind probably against the run of play, but the goal quickly after they scored by Paddy was important and the second was good enough to win any game. "To go a goal down it's always very important to get a foothold back in the game and it was a relief more than anything to see the ball hit the back of the net. "The second one he's picked up from just inside our half and run half the length of the pitch and scored a terrific goal. "He's a good finisher and he's a real handful for anybody. "I think we worked hard for our chances. We worked hard for the ball, worked hard for each other and I thought we were really good value for the three points." In contrast, Barnsley boss Danny Wilson felt like his side never quite played to their potential and will need to improve quickly. He said: "Without being too critical, I don't think we played anything like what we can play. "I don't think there was any intensity, I thought our decision-making and opportunities to pass the ball with any fluency or quickness wasn't there. "We seemed to get ourselves into trouble by moving the ball too slowly or making slow decisions and that helped Scunthorpe to press us. "We scored against the run of play to a certain degree and I thought it would kick us into gear a bit, but we didn't get a chance to get a grip on the game because we conceded so quickly. It was criminal. "The second was very poor defending I have to say. We can't hide the fact we have to do massively better than that. "We threw everything at them second half and we've had chances to equalise but didn't take them. "The defensive group is better than that but we have to believe in them. The fine margins in this league mean if you defend like that then you won't win many games."
