Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court following his arrest by police when he landed at Heathrow

Craig Whyte will appear in Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday after being arrested in connection with an alleged involvement with a fraudulent scheme to acquire Rangers.

The former Rangers owner was held by police in Mexico on Wednesday and was flown to Heathrow Airport in London on Thursday, where he was arrested by Police Scotland officers.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "We can confirm a 43-year-old man is in custody, following the execution of arrest warrant, and is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court tomorrow.

"As proceedings are active and subject to contempt, it would not be appropriate to comment further."

A warrant was issued a fortnight ago for Whyte in connection with an investigation into the sale of Rangers Football Club in 2011.

Four men - David Grier, Paul Clark, David Whitehouse and Gary Withey - have already appeared in court charged with fraudulent activity. The four men were released on bail following a hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

There are two warrants out for Whyte; one from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and the other warrant from the High Court in London after Whyte failed to attend four hearings in relation to more than £20million of unpaid debt to the finance firm Ticketus.

Whyte took control of Rangers in May 2011 before he placed the club into administration in February 2012.

The Oldco Rangers was liquidated several months later and Whyte was subsequently banned for life from any involvement in Scottish football.
