Karen Carney says England’s historic friendly against Germany at Wembley on Sunday is a ‘massive milestone’ for women’s football in this country.

England’s women will play at the new Wembley Stadium for the first time in front of a 55,000 sell-out crowd, almost double the previous record for a home women’s international.

Birmingham City Ladies forward Carney is in line to win her 100th cap – a week after Wayne Rooney achieved the same feat - if she is selected to face European champions Germany this weekend.

“55,000 people there this Sunday for the first time the female side have played at the new Wembley, and against Germany as well - what a great occasion,” Carney told Sky Sports News HQ.

“It’s exciting but I don’t think it will hit us till we are there. We’re really excited and I’ve been saying to everybody that it’s every boys dream and every girls dream to play at Wembley.

“It will be a massive milestone and to get 55,000 people there shows the market. Going forward after this game I think there will be a lot more people that have more interest in us. I think it is a massive game and occasion for us.”

England captain Steph Houghton was the last woman to score at Wembley, netting the winner for Team GB in a 1-0 win over Brazil at the London 2012 Olympics.

She admits the squad are relishing the prospect of taking on two-time world champions Germany on the hallowed turf at Wembley Stadium

“We’ve played there previously in the Olympics for Team GB which was certainly a watershed moment for women’s football in general,” she said.

“But I think in terms of English football, for the English women’s team to play at Wembley, the home of English football, it’s going to be a massive occasion for us all.

“We know we have got a really tough test against the Germans but mostly the vibe around the camp is that we can’t wait to get out there.”
