Wolves are eyeing free agent Kei Kamara as they try to apply for a work permit for the striker.

The Sierra Leone international has been on trial at Molineux after being released by Middlesbrough in the summer.

Boss Kenny Jackett wants to add to more firepower to his side, who have scored 11 goals in nine Sky Bet Championship games ahead of Wednesday's visit of Huddersfield.

"We need to know whether he's somebody we can go for because if we can't get a work permit, it's not worth pursuing," he told the Wolverhampton Express & Star.

"We were looking to perhaps give him a short-term contract or extend his trial but, unless we know whether we can get the permit, there's no point carrying on."

Kamara has spent the majority of his career in the United States and scored 38 goals in 118 games for Sporting Kansas City between 2009 and 2013.

He spent five months on loan at Norwich in 2013, scoring once in 11 games before joining Middlesbrough that summer.

He bagged four goals in 25 games last season but fell out of favour with boss Aitor Karanka at the Riverside and left in August.

Jackett added: "He has a lot of pace and power, good heading ability, and even as an impact substitute we feel he can make a difference."

Kamara is believed to have played at least 70 per cent of his country's internationals in the last two years, fulfilling the criteria for a work permit.

If Sierra Leone were in FIFA's top 70 nations - which they were last week - he would be granted one automatically but they dropped to 71 in the new rankings.
