Leyton Orient manager Russell Slade has handed in his resignation, and the Sky Bet League One club are now considering their response.

An official statement on the club's website issued on Wednesday evening confirmed that Slade had written a letter of resignation after a second approach for his services from Cardiff City was turned down.

The statement read: "The chairman and the CEO of Leyton Orient have received a resignation letter from Russell Slade a few minutes ago.

"This has not happened by chance after the club rejected this afternoon, a proposal from the general manager of Cardiff City regarding the transfer of Russell Slade. The lawyers of the club are now studying the file."

Slade, 53, was installed as the odds-on favourite to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Cardiff manager at the weekend, although Orient turned down the Championship club’s first approach to speak to him on Monday.

The London club's initial refusal left Slade fearing that the Bluebirds would look elsewhere for their new boss.

"It’s frustrating," said Slade following his side's 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

"It's been turned down and that's all I can say, and whether Cardiff come back again I'm not sure.

"Maybe they'll move on. It's a big club and it will be a big job for somebody that eventually ends up with it."

Slade has been in charge at Orient for almost four and a half years, although there were suggestions last week that he could face the sack if his team lost at Notts County.

They drew 1-1 at Meadow Lane and followed that up with a 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe on Saturday before being defeated by the Blades on Tuesday.
