Steven Gerrard has praised the determination and battling spirit of new Liverpool vice-captain Jordan Henderson.

Henderson endured a stuttering start to his Anfield career following his big-money move from Sunderland three years ago, leading some fans to question his place at the club.

Jordan showed through thick and thin that he is prepared to dig deep and go in where it hurts to turn these fans around.

Boss Brendan Rodgers offered him an escape route to Fulham in the summer of 2012 but Henderson stayed and has fought his way into a regular starting berth.

Skipper Gerrard is delighted for his new vice-captain, telling the Daily Star: “A lot of players give up and end up falling down the leagues and going to clubs which are not as big because they can’t handle the pressure.

“But Jordan showed through thick and thin that he is prepared to dig deep and go in where it hurts to turn these fans around.

“It sums him up first and foremost as a man but also as a player.”
