Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has urged Simon Mignolet to keep his performances up to ensure he retains his first-team spot.

The Reds have been linked with free agent Victor Valdes this summer as the Spanish keeper searches for a new club, but a move is yet to materialise.

Valdes’ arrival would see him and Mignolet compete for the No.1 jersey at Anfield, and Rodgers revealed that there is no guarantee that the former Sunderland keeper will be a regular starter.

“The key thing – and the message to all the players - is make sure you are on the front foot,” Rodgers told the Daily Express.

“Be aggressive, don’t wait for it.

“He (Mignolet) is a bit of a laid-back type of person. But I think he is aggressive too."

For the time being however, Rodgers insisted Mignolet’s position is not under threat, and the 26-year-old remains integral to the Reds' ambitions.

“He’s our No.1 keeper, and he has plenty of experience,” Rodgers added.

“He just continues to work on that relationship with the back four and deal with that."
