Stoke manager Mark Hughes has defended his reign at QPR ahead of his return to Loftus Road on Saturday.

The Welshman, 50, was appointed R's boss in January 2012 but, despite splashing the cash on big names like Park Ji-Sung, Julio Cesar, Jose Bosingwa and Esteban Granero, endured a disastrous start to the 2012/2013 campaign and was sacked in November.

When quizzed on his time with the west Londoners, Hughes said: "You make the changes for what you think are the right reasons, reasons that you think will enhance the club and allow it to flourish and prosper in the future but sometimes it doesn't come off and you have to hold your hands up.

"On paper, the players were very good players but the combination and the dynamic in the dressing room just didn't work. Sometimes you can't envisage that happening until you bring the group together.

"It was a difficult time and obviously at the end of the day I was judge on results. My results at the beginning of the season weren't good enough so I lost my job."

QPR counterpart Harry Redknapp was quick to defend Hughes, adding: "That wouldn't all be down to Mark. That happens. There were players here he probably inherited and some came in. You never get a perfect group and it was a difficult time for him.

"He's gone to Stoke now and he's doing an excellent job at Stoke like he's done at most clubs he's been at. People have always got their own opinions about everyone and you can't please everyone all the time."
