Ki Sung-yueng has committed his future to Swansea City by signing a new four-year contract, taking him through to 2018.

The South Korea international appeared destined to be heading for the Liberty Stadium exits after joining Sunderland on a season-long loan in the summer of 2013.

He was, however, allowed to move on by Michael Laudrup, and has returned to South Wales under the guidance of Garry Monk.

I’m very pleased. This is what I have wanted to do - my first option was always to renew with Swansea.

The current occupant of the Swansea managerial hot-seat has always maintained that Ki has a big part to play in his plans, and the 25-year-old is delighted to have seen a positive start to the new season for both him and the club rewarded with fresh terms.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m very pleased. This is what I have wanted to do - my first option was always to renew with Swansea.

“I am very pleased with all of the players and staff at the club, so I am very happy to sign a new contract.

“I want to sacrifice myself for the team and, as always, do as much as I can to help this team improve. I will be giving 100 per cent, and I am looking forward to continuing my work with the club.”

Ki has also praised Monk for leaving the door open to him, with a spell spent battling for Premier League survival at the Stadium of Light having helped to improve him as a player.

He added:  “There are a lot of differences in just one year.

“I needed to grow as a player, and I have more confidence since returning. This year, I want to show how much I have grown.

“We work very hard in training. I know the manager very well and he knows me. He knows my strength and weaknesses, and I can learn from him.

“He wants us to be very organised and disciplined. I like the way he manages, so I think we will improve a lot under him.”
