A Mike Magee goal was enough to give Chicago Fire a 1-0 win over New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer on Sunday.

A foul in the box gave Magee the chance to open the scoring, which he succeeded at doing on the follow-up after Luis Robles had saved the initial spot-kick.

In the Fire goal, Sean Johnson made a string of impressive saves to preserve his side’s lead and give them a victory that leaves them eighth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Darren Mattocks’ fourth goal in his last five games helped the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Sporting Kansas City 2-0.

The Whitecaps took the lead in the 17th minute after a mix-up between Sporting defender Igor Juliao and goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum resulted in the former’s back-pass header beating the latter and finding the goal.

Vancouver doubled their advantage in the 30th minute when Mattocks slotted a low shot past Gruenebaum after being found by Pedro Morales.

At Seattle, Marco Pappa scored in the 69th minute and Gonzalo Pineda converted a penalty six minutes later as the Sounders beat the Houston Dynamo 2-0.

The win lifted the Sounders back to the top of the Western Conference and overall standings with 41 points.
