Championship: Steve Evans believes Rotherham can prove more than a match for rivals

Rotherham manager Steve Evans believes the Millers can prove more than a match for some big-spending rivals in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

United have made 11 new signings since securing a second straight promotion, but only one of those recruits cost them any money, whereas other teams in the division have been splashing the cash.

However, Evans is determined to only focus on his own squad ahead of next month's opening match at Derby, before Wolves and Watford visit the New York Stadium in a tough start to the campaign.

"We know what's coming up in the Championship," he told the Sheffield Star. "The size of the challenge is highlighted by a club, Fulham, spending £11.2million on one player in striker Ross McCormack. But we don't preoccupy ourselves over it. We concentrate on ourselves and what we need to do.

"Other teams will be spending big as well, teams like Cardiff. You can see Stuart Gray at our neighbours, Sheffield Wednesday, is starting to bring people in, and I expect Stuart Pearce at Nottingham Forest will buy players. Brighton and Hove Albion are another team with a big budget and Wigan have been spending too."

Having broken their own transfer record to sign striker Jordan Bowery, Evans is hoping to bring in another young forward before the window closes.
