New Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has revealed that Esteban Cambiasso rejected the chance to join the club.

Cambiasso is a free agent after being released at the end of his contract with Inter Milan, where he has played for the past ten years.

The midfielder stated last month that he had no intention of returning to Argentina to play for River Plate, as he wanted to continue his career in Europe.

However, it appears he has no interest of playing for a Serie A side other than Inter after turning down the chance to join Sampdoria.

Ferrero had been keen to bring in the 33-year-old in a bid to strengthen Sampdoria’s squad after a 12th-place finish last season.

"I've contacted Cambiasso, but he won't play again in Italy to avoid betraying Inter," Ferrero told Gazzetta dello Sport.
