Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes that the club have an investment for the future in Luke Shaw.
The 19-year-old became the world’s most expensive teenager when he moved to Old Trafford from Southampton for around £30million.
He is manager Louis van Gaal's second signing in two days and takes United's summer spending to nearly £60million following the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.
“It’s been in the pipeline for sometime now and they’ve finally got him,” Yorke told Sky Sports News. “He’s a fantastic left back and he’s had an outstanding season – a lot of United fans will be delighted they’ve got their man.
“But Patrice Evra is still at the club and he’s going to have a lot to say about who has that left back position!
“I don’t think he’s the complete article – he’s still a very young boy – but by going to United you’d expect him to develop.
“You can see the potential – and I think that’s why Evra is still at the club, so he can learn from someone who’s been very successful at the club.
“He will learn a lot about being at a top football club and I’m sure he will turn out to be money well spent.”
Yorke feels that Shaw and Herrera's arrivals are just the start of a busy summer for United in the transfer market.
“You look at the players who have left Manchester United – Rio (Ferdinand), Vidic, Ryan Giggs and possibly a few more – they need to add to the squad, probably six or seven players from what I’m hearing.”
“The manager is on duty with Holland at the World Cup and doing extremely well but I’m sure he’s got one eye on the players he wants to bring in.
Tony Adams is another who thinks Shaw is worth the hefty price tag.
Speaking at a charity boxing event in East London to raise money for the Mo Farah foundation, Adams said: “That’s the price of a player these days – and Shaw is a super player. And they need a left-back.”
