Bournemouth have opened talks with Steve Cook over a new deal in a bid to fend off interest from Premier League and Championship clubs.

Sky Sports understands the Cherries are determined to keep hold of defender Cook and are ready to offer him a new deal despite handing him a new contract only last summer.

Cook has established himself as one of the best young players outside the Premier League on the back of a stand-out campaign for Bournemouth last term.

The 23-year-old has been a revelation since he was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2012 and his progress has not gone unnoticed.

Bournemouth were bracing themselves for offers for Cook this summer, but they have shown their desire to keep hold of their prize asset by starting talks over a new deal.
