Malky Mackay believes Cardiff City's derby win over Swansea City has put smiles back on people's faces following a turbulent few weeks for the club.

Steven Caulker's second-half header against his former club settled a first top-flight meeting between the south Wales rivals.

Mackay's position as Cardiff manager has been in the spotlight of late following owner Vincent Tan's decision to get rid of his head of recruitment Iain Moody.

However, Mackay was delighted to claim three points at the Cardiff City Stadium which lifted the Bluebirds above Swansea in the table.

"It's a good day all round," Mackay told Sky Sports. "It was a hugely important day, in terms of locally to south Wales, but also as far as we were concerned in terms of the background noise of the last three or four weeks.

"That win certainly helps to put a lot of smiles on people's faces and you see the atmosphere, I've never known anything like it and to come away with, not only the win, but also the performance as we were playing a really good team here today.

"It's a team that have been winning well in Europe, are a mid-table Premier League team who have been in the division for three years. For us to come up this year and play to that standard, especially in the second half, I thought we were very dominant."

Asked if the win had eased the pressure on himself, Mackay said: "There's pressure on me every week, on the staff and the football club.

"It's a tough, uncompromising league, but it's the only place to be. We've got good people here, who are enjoying playing in this division."

The Cardiff boss continued: "I think tactically we played Swansea very well, who on certain days can be difficult to play against with their shape and the way they play. To a man we were excellent and exposed any uncertain areas.

"It was a good game. Despite it being a low-scoring game, I thought it was a pretty good game and I was very pleased with the way my team performed today."
