Shrewsbury have offered a trial to full-back Leon McSweeney after loanee James Tavernier returned to parent club Newcastle.
A foot injury to Tavernier means he has returned to the north east for treatment with Shrews boss Graham Turner admitting the defender could need surgery. With striker Akwasi Asante's temporary stay also cut short after he was recalled by Birmingham, Shrewsbury are light on numbers. Turner moved to bring in 29-year-old free agent McSweeney and gave him a chance to impress for the reserves on Monday night. Speaking to the Shropshire club's official website, Turner said: "He hasn't got a club and obviously we've had the problem at right-back although I thought Connor Goldson had probably his best game at right-back on Saturday against Swindon and he's staking a claim there. "Leon McSweeney's played quite a few games; I think 60 odd games for Leyton Orient in the last two seasons. He's without a club so we just thought we would have a look at him and see how it works out this week. "He's with us the full week and obviously played at Morecambe (for the reserves) so we'll see how things transpire."
