Ciaran Clark is prepared to delay talks regarding a new contract at Aston Villa until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old centre-half remains tied to the club until May 2014, so is in no rush to talk terms.
He would welcome the opportunity to prolong his stay with Villa, but appreciates that personal issues must be put to one side during a Premier League basement battle.
Clark said: "The most important thing is that we stay up and then I hope we can start talks."
Villa will be looking to take another sizeable step towards safety on Sunday when they play host to Liverpool.
Paul Lambert's men collected one of their seven victories this season at Anfield back in December and Clark is confident they can claim a notable double.
He added: "We believe in ourselves and feel good about Liverpool's visit.
"Yes, they are a great side with some top-class players, but we beat them away and hopefully we can do it again."
