Memorable debut for Spillane

Debutant Michael Spillane was delighted to help Southend to "an important three points" at Chesterfield on Saturday.

Spillane, who arrived from Dagenham for an undisclosed fee earlier this month, played 90 minutes on his Shrimpers bow as the Essex outfit ended a run of three successive league defeats to climb back into the play-off places. Gavin Tomlin, believed to be the subject of interest from League Two rivals Gillingham, bagged the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute - his 15th of the season. Spillane told the club's official website: "It was great to finally get out there and make my debut. We had to work very hard. "Before the game, we wanted to win but would have been happy with a point so we're delighted to have come away with all three points considering how the game went. "We had to defend very well and my job really was to just try and break up the play and help the back four. "It's good to have kept a clean sheet and to have got back to winning ways in the league - it was an important three points."
