Duo's potential excites Adams

Port Vale manager Micky Adams can already see promise in the strike partnership between Tom Pope and Lee Hughes.

Following his arrival from Notts County at the start of last week, Hughes started alongside leading scorer Pope for the top-of-the-table clash at Gillingham on Saturday. Hughes marked his debut with a goal, putting Vale 2-0 ahead after Pope had opened the scoring with his 26th strike of the season. Following his side's 2-1 success at Priestfield which saw Vale usurp Gillingham as League Two leaders, Adams said: "I thought Lee Hughes' link-up play with Tom Pope was excellent and I saw a useful combination out there. The fact that both of them scored as well helps. "They are different types of players. Hughesy made a lot of good runs off Popey - he knows that Popey is going to win headers, and he worked extremely hard." Adams added: "With Ben Williamson as well, who was slightly unlucky not to start after his performance last week, I think we have got some decent strikers at the club."
