The former England captain will end his six-year spell in LA after next month's MLS Cup as he looks to "experience one last challenge" in his playing career.
Football Federation Australia last week claimed they had been approached by the former Manchester United star's camp with a view to him spending a short stint in the A-League, though his spokesman described that as "rubbish".
However Melbourne Heart CEO Scott Munn has since said: "We're putting forward an offer, it's compelling and the opportunity is here for him to come here. That is absolutely legitimate."
