Sky Sports understands Mick McCarthy is in advanced talks with Ipswich over taking charge as manager at Portman Road.

Tractor Boys chief executive Simon Clegg earlier on Tuesday denied reports the club were set to confirm McCarthy as their new boss following Paul Jewell's departure.

But it appears the Yorkshireman is still the frontrunner for the post, with negotiations at an advanced stage and reports that he could be appointed on Wednesday.

McCarthy last managed at Wolves before he was sacked in February after six years in charge of the Midlanders, who were relegated under his replacement Terry Connor last season.

Should he take over at Ipswich he would be tasked with helping the Suffolk side escape the basement of the Championship, with the club having failed to win since August.
