West Ham manager Sam Allardyce feels on-loan striker Andy Carroll is being treated unfairly by referees due to his height.

The Hammers boss does not feel the 6ft 3in Liverpool frontman is being awarded enough free-kicks when he is manhandled by other players.

But Allardyce admits it was a poor performance from his side rather than any influence from the referee that saw them beaten 2-1 at Wigan on Saturday.

The West Ham boss told The Sun: "Refs aren't giving him enough free-kicks when he is manhandled.

"Because he is 6ft 3in he doesn't get the free-kicks a lad who is 5ft 2in might get.

"But we can't look at the ref here and say he's cost us the game. We were so poor we've done more than enough ourselves to do that!"
