Stoke boss Tony Pulis is not surprised by the success of Steven Fletcher at Sunderland after revealing he tried to sign him in the summer.

Pulis will come up against Fletcher on Saturday when Sunderland make the trip to the Britannia Stadium.

Fletcher has scored five goals in six Premier League games for Sunderland since his big-money arrival from Wolves in the summer and Pulis believes the Scot could be one of the bargains of the season despite his £14million price tag.

"He's one of the players we looked at in the summer and I'm not surprised he's been a success," said Pulis.

"They paid a lot of money and it raised a lot of eyebrows. But he's certainly given them a good return. He might be one of the bargains of the season.

"He's good in the box, takes good positions, he's always on the move and his goalscoring record is first class."
