Leeds' Neil Warnock describes comment about Chris Kirkland as "out of order"

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock has apologised after claiming that Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland "went down like a tonne of bricks" after being struck by a fan.

After Michael Tonge had equalised for Leeds, several fans spilled onto the pitch and one was seen to push Kirkland in the face before making his way back into the stand.

In his post-match interview, Warnock condemned the action of the fan, but added jokingly that Kirkland, who looked shocked by the assault, went down easily.

On Saturday, he apologised for the comment after seeing replays of the incident.

"I was told by a member of staff that had happened. But having looked at it again, Chris is a good professional and I was out order for saying that really," Warnock told Sky Sports News.

"There is nobody that should be allowed to come on the pitch and do that to Chris, they pushed him over.

"When I saw it again, I can understand why he was mad."

Warnock also had sympathy for the abuse received from the crowd by former Cardiff manager Dave Jones but feels that, unfortunately, this is not uncommon.

"We talk about chants but everybody was to blame. I got almost 90 minutes of abuse but you get used to it."

The game finished 1-1 after Tonge's goal cancelled out a first half header from Jay Bothroyd.
