Italy have been boosted by the news that Mario Balotelli will be available for Tuesday's clash with Denmark, but Gianluigi Buffon is facing a race to be fit.
Balotelli missed the 3-1 victory over Armenia on Friday with flu but has now recovered and is set to go straight into Cesare Prandelli's starting XI.
Goalkeeper Buffon is doubtful, however, as medical staff have revealed he is suffering from 'fatigue in his left adductor'.
Azzurri team doctor Enrico Castellacci expects the 34-year-old to recover in time for kick-off against Denmark, but Morgan De Sanctis of Napoli is another option if Prandelli does not want to take the risk.
"There's no alarm. Buffon has a fatigued left adductor and like all muscle problems we'll be keeping an eye on it. But it doesn't mean he won't recover in time," said Castellacci.
The win over Armenia left Italy top of Group B after three games, with a two-point lead on Bulgaria and three on Czech Republic, who have played a game less.
Armenia sit in fourth on three points while Denmark, who have also only played two qualifiers, are in fifth place. Malta prop up the group on no points after three straight defeats.
