Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven is likely to be out of action until November following a recent operation.

The 22-year-old had surgery to tidy-up a knee problem at the end of August and was expected to be out for around six weeks.

But manager Peter Houston has revealed the player is still in the recovery stages and has not returned to training.

Houston said: "Gary isn't anywhere near ready to join back in training. He's still doing the rehab.

"I think he's going to be out a bit longer than we first thought but we will just wait and see."

Mackay-Steven's last appearance was the 3-1 defeat at Kilmarnock on 25 August, and in his absence United have slipped to second from bottom in the Scottish Premier League.
