Chris Cohen has penned a new three-and-a-half-year contract with Nottingham Forest, keeping him at the club until 2016.

The midfielder joined Forest from Yeovil Town in 2007 and has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club.

He recently made his return to action after a serious knee ligament injury and will be hoping to play a leading role in the Reds' quest to secure promotion out of the Championship.

Cohen's previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but he will now remain part of the first-team set-up at Forest for the foreseeable future.

Chairman Omar Al Hasawi told the club's official website: "Chris is an ambitious player and wants to play at the very highest level.

"We share his ambition for Nottingham Forest and it is fantastic news that he wants to play a key role in the future of our great club."

Owner Fawaz Al Hasawi has also welcomed Cohen's show of commitment, posting on Twitter: "Fantastic news - Chris Cohen is staying with NFFC. It is with pleasure I can announce he has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract."

Fresh from putting pen to paper, Cohen told Forest Player: "I'm at a great club and there's no reason why I would have wanted to leave.

"The thought of letting my contract run down just didn't interest me - I've been a Forest player for five years and can't wait for the next phase of my career with the club.

"The support I was given by everyone at the club during my injury lay-off was superb and the ambition being shown by the new owners, the Al Hasawi family, is very exciting.

"They have big plans for the club and I'm excited to be a part of that.

"I'm grateful for the faith and trust they have put in me by offering me a new contract and I'm looking forward to repaying them.

"I love Nottingham and can see myself living here after I've finished my playing career."
