Heiko Westermann has been drafted into the Germany squad for the World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden.
The Hamburg defender has been included following the withdrawal of Mats Hummels who bruised his foot in Borussia Dortmund's 1-1 draw against Hannover at the weekend.
With Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender also pulling out at the weekend, Westermann is seen as a man who can cover both positions having played in the centre for former club Schalke.
The 29-year-old has not featured for his country since winning his 24th cap in the 0-0 draw against next week's opponents Sweden in November 2010.
Germany are currently top of Group C and travel to Dublin to take on Ireland on Friday before hosting the Swedes next Tuesday.
