Frustrated defender Kaspars Gorkss says Reading only have themselves to blame after Newcastle striker Demba Ba's controversial late equaliser denied them a priceless win.

Senegal striker Ba admitted he deflected the ball into the Royals net with his arm as Newcastle claimed a 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium.

But the goal stood to prevent the newly-promoted Royals from earning their first win of the Premier League season.

"Ba said himself and apologised to our keeper that he handled the ball - but that's football."

However, Gorkss believes his side could have defended better for both Newcastle goals.

"Ba said himself and apologised to our keeper that he handled the ball - but that's football." said the Latvian. "Fair play to him but if the ref doesn't see it then it doesn't count.

"It is doubly frustrating. But we still could have played a little better for both goals anyway."

He added: "We need to be more ruthless and grind the result out."
