Nottingham Forest striker Simon Cox suffered only slight ligament damage during Republic of Ireland's friendly win over Oman, the club have confirmed.

There were fears that the 25-year-old was facing a long spell on the sidelines with a broken metatarsal after being helped off in the latter stages of Tuesday evening's 4-1 international victory at Craven Cottage.

But scans have allayed those fears, although the former West Brom forward is very unlikely to feature in Saturday's Championship clash with Birmingham.

A statement on the club's official website read: "He underwent a scan on Wednesday afternoon, which showed he has suffered slight ligament damage rather than a fracture.

"Cox will almost certainly miss Saturday's home date with Birmingham."
