Sky Sports understands Aston Villa are in talks to bring Crewe Alexandra skipper Ashley Westwood to the club.
Alex boss Steve Davis had confirmed earlier in the week that Westwood has been the subject of interest from several clubs.
The 22-year-old, who has been linked with Everton and Swansea City, is on the radar of Villa.
And the club which is sitting bottom of the Premier League are now firm favourites to land the midfielder before the end of this summer's transfer window.
Villa boss Paul Lambert is keen to add more young British players to his set-up, and Westwood, who is a product of Crewe's youth academy, fits the bill.
Westwood, who is likened to Liverpool's recent signing Joe Allen, has been a regular starter for the League One side and helped them to promotion last season.
