Werder Bremen's hopes of signing Nigeria striker Joseph Akpala have been thrown into doubt after they suffered a shock elimination from the German Cup.
Club Brugge star Akpala looked set for a move to the Bundesliga and reports had suggested a €1.3million (£1m) fee had been agreed for the 25-year-old, who has just one year left on his contract.
But Bremen were over the weekend stunned by third-tier Preussen Munster in the cup and general manager Klaus Allofs has admitted the signing of Akpala has become more difficult.
Allofs told Deutsche Presseagentur: "From our point of view, Joseph Akpala is an interesting player we would like to sign.
"Usually, there were just details left to complete the deal. But now we have a different situation. We had simply taken into account being in round two of the German Cup."
