Sky Sports sources understand Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita is having a medical at Newcastle.
The Holland international confirmed earlier this week the Magpies had struck a deal with the Eredivisie champions to bring him to St James' Park.
The 23-year-old, who can play at left-back or in midfield, has been on Alan Pardew's radar for much of the summer and Ajax were reluctant to sell.
But it now appears Anita is closing on a move to Tyneside after arriving in the North East for a medical.
The Dutchman is reportedly set to sign a five-year contract with the Magpies, who he claims will pay Ajax a fixed fee of €8.5million (£6.7m), plus bonuses.
Should the medical run smoothly the transfer could be finalised in the coming days.
